FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 6, 2001, PORTLAND, OR - Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) and Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC) are pleased to announce the formation of a new copyright licensing agency specifically to serve the needs of the religious community.
The new independent licensing agency - Christian Video Licensing International (CVLI) - will provide a new, low-cost license to churches, religious schools, and all other church-operated sites to show not only Christian videos but other family titles as well. The CVLI license will allow the public performance of copyrighted home videocassettes and discs in all church locations for a single annual fee.
The International Christian Visual Media Association (ICVM), which represents the Christian producers, has fully endorsed the creation of the new entity and said, "It will boost awareness of its members' product and provide for much needed royalty revenue to increase the production of new and better programs," according to Brice Fennig, ICVM Executive Director.
"This type of license is going to make things easier and less confusing for churches to use movies and videos in their ministries. CVLI can act like a 'one-stop shop' on behalf of producers. This way, a member church can use all kinds of visual media in their service and small group studies without having to pay extra or ask each company for permission," according to Rick Garside, former ICVM President.
Christian Video Licensing International (CVLI) will be represented to churches by Christian Copyright Licensing International, which currently issues over 160,000 CCLI church music licenses. CVLI will serve the licensing needs of the entire religious community in the United States and Canada.
CVLI has added the Christian producers to the list of Motion Picture Licensing Corporation's (MPLC) licensors that include major Hollywood studios, and all the important children's, family and information content producers, such as Scholastic and McGraw Hill. MPLC will continue to offer its public performance Umbrella LicenseSM to the secular marketplace. The CVLI License, therefore, will combine the best of MPLC with the newly added Christian producers' titles.
CVLI's fee structure has been closely patterned after the successful licensing practice of CCLI. It is linked to the size of membership. Churches and related organizations can elect to exhibit Christian product only, or the full list of secular, family and Christian films. "The new CVLI license program should be particularly beneficial for small churches which previously had to forego exhibition of videos at their functions due to cost," according to Howard Rachinski, President and CEO of CCLI.
"The increased usage of videos within religious services and throughout the ministry makes it desirable to focus on a license which will serve the exact needs of the church. This license will allow churches of all sizes to comply with federal law requiring a license for the exhibition of copyrighted videos and discs," added Tim Mahoney, President of ICVM.
